Budapest dormitory damaged by students with a hammer

By Tuesday morning, parts of Budapest University of Technology and Economics’ (BME) Schönherz Dormitory was destroyed by students. The university has ordered an investigation, and the company responsible for operating the dormitory pressed charges against unknown perpetrators.

The story of BME’s damaged Schönherz Dormitory went public after some video surfaced the internet in which people shockingly recorded the damages left after the violent students.

What happened?

Students have violently crashed many parts in the dormitory by Tuesday morning. They threw away chairs, beds, and mattresses, while in one of the rooms, they started destroying the walls with a hammer.

According to Telex, the demolishing started following the announcement of Hungarian Prime Minister, Viktor Orbán about new restrictive measures. Orbán imposed stricter measures to prevent the spread of the coronavirus, including the transfer of higher education to the online space, as well as the closing of dormitories.

BME has confirmed the destruction in Schönherz Dormitory and told that they had ordered an investigation.

“We will only know how many students took part in the destructions after the investigations are done. About the sanctions the participating students can expect, the university’s Disciplinary Board will decide. Regarding the case, the company that is responsible for operating the dormitory will press charges against unknown perpetrators.” – they said.

According to Telex’s sources, the police also visited the dormitory at the night of the destructions. In Budapest Metropolitan Police’s (BRFK) response to the case, they added that the police was called to the venue because of noise complaints.

At the time of their visit, they did not find any other infringements but based on the surfacing video records on the internet, BRFK will initiate investigation proceedings.
